NPS Investment Options

The NPS subscribers are allowed to invest in Tier I and Tier II accounts of NPS. At the time of investment, they need to choose investment option under NPS as per their chioce. Given below are the details of such availabe investment options and asset allocation of NPS contributions.

Asset Allocation Options in NPS

NPS offers following 3 Asset Allocation Options to NPS subscribers:

  1. Equities (E)
  2. Corporate Bonds (C)
  3. Government Securities (G)

Maximum Permissible Limit (M): NPS restricts investment towards Equities Fund to 50% of contribution amount for both Tier I and Tier II NPS Accounts for subscribers over 60 years of age and 75% of contribution amount for both Tier I and Tier II NPS Accounts for subscribers below 50 years of age. However, the subscribers can invest up to 100% in Corporate Bonds or Government Securities Fund.

NPS Investment Options

There are two investment options available under NPS as detailed below: (Note: subscribers get the flexibility to switch between Active Choice and Auto Choice twice in a financial year)

(1) Active Choice: In this option, subscriber gets the flexibility to choose his own asset allocation across Equity, Corporate Bonds and Government Securities. Investment in Equity is restricted to 75% of contribution amount, up to 50 years of age. While Investment in Equity is restricted to 50% of contribution amount, for 60 years & above. From 51 years and above, maximum permitted Equity Investment will be as per the equity allocation matrix given in the table below:

However, in Corporate Bonds and Government Securities, subscriber can invest 100% of contribution amount. The Subscriber has to provide the PFM, Asset Class as well as percentage allocation to be done in each scheme of the PFM.

(2) Auto Choice: In this option investment across Equity, Corporate Bonds and Government Securities is done as per the age of the subscriber as per below chart:
