How to Apply for Permanent Licence?

As Learner's Licence is valid for 180 days, you need to apply for a Permanent Licence within these 180 days. You can apply for a Permanent Licence after 30 days from the date of issuance of Learners licence but before 180 days from getting your Learner's Licence. For getting a Permanent Licence, you need to pass a driving test. After passing the driving test, the Learner's licence may be surrendered in exchange for a Permanent Licence (full Indian licence) for the relevant kind of vehicle. A permanent licence is valid for 20 years from the date of issue or till the licence holders turns 50 years of age, whichever happens earlier. The driving licence is required to be renewed on expiry of its validity.

You are eligible for Permanent Licence, if

  1. You have a valid learner licence
  2. You apply for it after 30 days and within 180 days from the date of issuance of learner licence
  3. You are conversant with the vehicle systems, driving, traffic rules & regulations

How to Apply for Permanent Licence?

For obtaining a Permanent Licence, you must have a valid Learner's Licence, and must apply after 30 days and within 180 days of issue of the Learner's Licence. You should be conversant about vehicle systems, driving, traffic rules regulations.

  1. Test Procedure for Driving licence in India (Online)
  2. Goto the "Sarathi" website
  3. Open the driving licence application form
  4. Fill in the details in the application form as per the instructions provided on the screen
  5. Click on "Submit" button
  6. Upload the documents to be submitted along with the application form such as proof of age, proof of address and learner's licence number
  7. A web application number will be generated after you click on "Submit" button. You can track the status of the application with the help of this number
  8. Once the application has been processed, a notification will be sent via SMS
