Important Steps to be Taken after Receiving the Debit Card

When you receive your new debit card, you want to use it as early as possible in order to make transactions swiftly and easily and to manage your finances in a better way but before you start using your debit card for any transaction, you need to check some of the important issues and also go through its activation process. You must carefully check the following stuffs.

1. Check whether your name embossed on the debit card is correct
2. Read the user manual and the attached terms conditions and sign immediately on the signature panel provided on the back of the card in token of having read and accepted the terms and conditions and also to avoid any misuse
3. Collect the PIN mailer from the branch/ sent by branch to you through post and check that the PIN mailer has not been tampered with
4. In case PIN mailer has been tampered with, report it immediately to your bank branch and take necessary action
5. Keep your PIN a secret and never keep the PIN number with your ATM / Debit Cards
6. You must know that a debit card is not automatically activated. You are required to activate your debit card either through an ATM or by contacting the customer care of respective bank
7. For debit card activation, go to the ATM, enter your Debit Card and enter the ATM PIN
8. The PIN must be changed immediately after the first transaction
9. Never disclose your PIN to anyone
10. Keep changing your PIN periodically

How to Activate a New Debit Card?

There are 3 different routes to activate your debit card. You can choose any one from them. The steps involved in PIN activation may differ across banks, however, some steps remain common which are outlined below,

(1) Activate a Debit Card Using an ATM Machine

Go to the ATM -> enter your Debit Card-> enter the ATM PIN-> create a new ATM PIN -> make transaction

(2) Activate a Debit Card via Netbanking

Log in to your bank’s net banking portal -> go to 'Debit Card’ section -> click on 'create PIN' option -> follow the instructions -> activate your debit card online

(3) Activate a Debit Card via Bank's Customer Care

Dial your bank's customer care number -> speak with an customer care executive to activate your debit card -> follow the instructions -> activate your debit card
