What is Aadhaar?

An Aadhaar is a unique 12 digit number issued to every Indian Resident based on his/ her demographic and biometric details. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has opened a large number of Aadhaar Enrolment Centres for providing Aadhaar related services and issuing Aadhaar Card. UIDAI also collects all the essential data and stores it in their secured database.

Aadhaar Enrolment Process

Step (1): Visit the Aadhaar Enrolment Centre

First of all, you will need to search for an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre near you. Then you have to visit there along with required documents for preparation of Aadhaar Card.

Step (2) Filling up the Aadhaar Enrolment Form

You can ask for an Aadhaar enrolment form from the centre and fill up the form completely.

Step (3) Submit the Aadhaar Enrolment Form

Submit the filled up the Aadhaar Enrolment Form along with proof of identity and proof of address documents.

Step (4) Complete the Enrolment Process

The operator at the centre will complete the enrolment process after checking the form and verifying the documents.

Step (5) Receive the Aadhaar Card

After preparation, your Aadhaar card will be dispatched on your registered address through post by UIDAI. Alternatively, you can also download e-Aadhaar (electronic copy of Aadhaar Card) by clicking HERE. You need to enter any of Aadhaar Number, Enrolment ID (EID) or Virtual ID (VID) to download it. It will be available in a password protected PDF file, which is digitally signed by the competent Authority of UIDAI.

UIDAI has opened large number of Aadhaar Card Enrolment Centres in India and has appointed registrars in these centres who run these centres. In case, you don't have an Aadhaar Card and want to apply for the same, then you will have to personally go to any of these centres along with required documents and fill up the application form, attach the required documents and get your biometric verification done. After that an Aadhaar Card will be issued to you.

There are two categories of Aadhaar card enrolment centres:

Types of Aadhaar Enrolment Centres

Presently, there are over 25,000 Aadhaar Enrolment Centres in India which are categorised into two types of Aadhaar card enrolment centres as mentioned below:

(1) Permanent Enrolment Centre: It is set up for full time to provide Aadhaar related services to the residents of India. Authorised agents are appointed to operate such centres.

(2) Temporary Enrolment Centre: It is set up on a temporary basis to provide Aadhaar related service to the residents. Non empanelled agents run such centres. It can stop its operations anytime.

Now the government has decided to shift Aadhaar card enrolment centres to either government or bank premises. UIDAI has asked private and public sector banks to open Aadhaar enrolment centre in at least 1 out of 10 branches.
