What is Permanent Account Number (PAN)?
Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a unique 10 digit alphanumeric identification number. It is a permanent number and does not change during life time of a person. It is issued by Income Tax Department. Each assessee (e.g. individual, firm, company etc.) is issued a unique PAN. All existing assessees or persons who are required to file an income tax return (ITR) of self or on behalf of other should have a Permanent Account Number (PAN).

Risk Involved in Having More than One PAN
As per Section 139A of Income Tax Act, 1961 a person can hold only one PAN. If you hold more than one PAN in your name, whether obtained by you purposefully or accidently or without any intention, you may be penalised for it. The penalty for having more than one PAN is Rs 10,000 as per Section 272B of the Income Tax Act.

Cases when a Person Can Get More than One PAN
- Submitting multiple applications for PAN allotment: Sometimes a person applies for PAN for the first time but does not receive it within some time. So he applies for the same again and ends up receiving 2 PAN Cards in his name carrying different numbers.
- Applying for changes or correction on PAN: When there are some changes or corrections required to be made in PAN Card details, any person can apply for these updations by filling up the PAN change application form and suppose, he/ she forgets to mention the PAN card number, he/ she is already holding. Then he/ she is allotted 2 PAN cards having different numbers.
- Applying for 2 PAN Cards intentionally for fraudulent purposes: Some persons can apply for more than one PAN for fraudulent purposes. In such case, they are allotted 2 PAN cards having different numbers.
- Change of Surname and Address after Marriage: Woman apply for change in Name, Surname and Address after marriage on her PAN by filling up the application form and if she forgets to mention the PAN card number, that she is already having, then she can be allotted 2 PAN cards having different numbers.

How to Surrender Additional PAN Card?
In case you have more than one PAN, then you should immediately surrender additional PAN. You can apply for surrender of PAN Offline and Online:
Surrendering Additional PAN card Online
- Visit Income Tax department's website https://incometax.sparshindia.com/pan/newPAN.asp
- Submit the following required details online
- Details of Additional PAN that you want to surrender
- Details of PAN you wish to retain
- Your Full Name
- Your Date of Birth (Date of Incorporation in case of Company)
- Your Contact Details
- Submit the duly filled form online

Surrendering Additional PAN card Online
There are following 2 options by which you can surrender additional PAN cards manually/ offline:
Option (1)
- You need to submit a written request letter addressed to the Assessing Officer under whose jurisdiction your Income Tax
- Mention the following required details in the letter
- Details of Additional PAN that you want to surrender
- Details of PAN you wish to retain
- Your Full Name
- Your Date of Birth (Date of Incorporation in case of Company)
- Your Contact Details
- Hand over the letter to the nearest tax office
- Obtained the acknowledgement
Option (2)
- You can fill and submit PAN Change Request application form (Form No 49A)
- Mention the PAN which you are using currently on top of this form
- Mention all other PAN/s inadvertently allotted to you (that you want to surrender) at item no. 11 of the form
- Attach copies of PAN card/s which is/ are being submitted for cancellation along with the form
