How to Get Temporary Registration?

Whenever a new vehicle is not permanently registered with an RTO, it is called a Temporary Registration. In such case, a temporary registration number is assigned by the dealer from which the vehicle is purchased. Temporary Registration serves the purpose when the vehicle is brand new and is yet to be permanently registered.

The validity of temporary registration number is for one month during which the vehicle should get registered by the concerned Regional Transport Office (RTO). One can also apply for the extension of the temporary registration for maximum 2 times by specifying the reason and period up to which the extension is required. In case, the vehicle has temporary registration, apply for permanent registration before the temporary registration expires.

How to Get Temporary Registration?

A step-by-step process to get temporary registration has been given below:

  1. Application in Form 20 is to be filled and to be submitted to the RTO in whose jurisdiction the vehicle is or to the dealer dealing in the sale of new motor vehicles recognised by the Transport Commissioner
  2. Attach all the required documents (as mentioned below) with Form 20

Documents Required for Temporary Registration

  1. Sales certificate in Form 21
  2. Road worthiness certificate in Form 22
  3. Valid insurance certificate
  4. Pollution under control certificate (PUC), if required
  5. Proof of address (Ration card, Electricity bill etc.), if required
  6. Copy of PAN card of Form 60 and Form 61 (as applicable), if required

How to Extend Temporary Registration?

A step-by-step process to extend temporary registration has been given below:

  1. Submit an application for extending Temporary Registration
  2. Specify the reason and period up to which the extension is required
  3. For extending Temporary Registration for second time: In case one has already applied for extension one time and is applying for extension for the second time, he will have to pay the penalty/ fee as defined by the Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989
  4. Submit the receipt of payment of penalty/ fee and tax for extension as specified in in Rule 81 of Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989
  5. Attach all the required documents (as mentioned below) with the application

Documents Required for Extend Temporary Registration

  1. Sales certificate in Form 21 or Original sales certificate from the concerned authorities in Form 21 in case of ex-army vehicle
  2. Road worthiness certificate in Form 22
  3. Valid insurance certificate
  4. Pollution under control certificate (PUC)
  5. Proof of address (Ration card, Electricity bill etc.)
  6. Copy of PAN card of Form 60 and Form 61 (as applicable)
  7. Design approval copy of STA in case Trailer or Semi-Trailer
