How to Transfer of Ownership of Vehicle from One Person to Another Person

Whenever you buy a vehicle from someone else, transfer of ownership of the vehicle is required to be transferred in your name. For transfer of ownership of vehicle from one person to another person in case of purchase of vehicle from another person, following step-by-step process is needed to be followed:

Step (1) Fill up Form 29 You have to procure Form 29 from respective RTO where the vehicle is registered. You need to submit this form along with all the details of the transferor and transferee.

Step (2) Submit Form 30 (If the transfer of ownership of the vehicle is occurring within the same state) You are required to submit Form 30 within 14 days of the transfer in addition to the documents that have to be submitted under Form 1.

Step (3) Submit Form 30 (If the transfer of ownership of the vehicle is occurring outside the state)

You need to submit Form 30 within 45 days of the transfer in addition to the documents that have to be submitted under Form 1 and Form 2.

Step (4) Pay the Fee You (transferee) will need to pay the fee and charges levied by the RTO under Rule 81 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989. The charges are taken for endorsement for issuance of new RC in buyer's name such charges are Rs 300 in most of the RTO offices. There are no road tax or re-registration charges to be paid in case of transfer within the same state.

Step (5) Submit Other Documents You also have to submit some other documents such as original RC book, vehicle chassis number imprint, Copy of vehicle insurance, PUC Certificate, self-attested copy of PAN card of transferee, etc.

After the transfer forms and documents are submitted and verified successfully by the concerned authorities, it does not take more than 2 weeks to get transferred ownership of vehicle from RTO.

Usually seller (transferor) is not required to remain personally present in RTO Office for transfer of vehicle. Only in case of mismatch of seller's signatures or when case seems doubtful to RTO Officer, he is called to come to RTO Office with ID Proof.
